“A True Story”
The transformation that occurs during the repetitive act of making
multiples (96 slip cast shoes) captivates and inspires me in curious ways.
As the process develops this transformation affects me on a personal level
while also affecting the form that is being replicated. The voice of the
single object becomes amplified by the production and presence of many,
and even though each object is produced in the same way, subtle variations
occur that render each one unique. A parallel can be drawn between
experiencing mundane daily events, and experiencing the process of
creating multiples. Both can be frustrating, meditative, exciting, boring,
exhausting and, in the end, deeply satisfying. All the little things that
happen along the way are just as important as the discovery at the
destination. That is the magic of this process.
"A True Story" presented itself to me late one night when I was in that
strange place of being not quite awake but also not yet asleep. After much
thought and working out the details, I set out in the wide-awake world to
create what I had envisioned. The materials used in "A True Story" are
specific to the symbology of the piece, and give reference to a particular
time in my life. We all have a story, and this is one of mine.
